A trio of Hewlett-Packard user groups are looking to consolidate into one organization.

In April, the membership of Encompass, the largest of the three, HP Interex EMEA and ITUG will vote on a plan that will combine the three user groups into a single, 50,000-member organization.

HP user groups Encompass, HP Interex EMEA and ITUG jointly announced their intent to consolidate into one worldwide group this week. The combined organization will feature new membership offerings and will operate under a new name that has not been determined yet. The merger is contingent upon voting of the memberships of the current organizations, which will take place this spring. The new organization plans to automatically honor any existing memberships.

HP user group Encompass took a big step toward the ultimate alliance of HP enterprise computer customers this week, when the largest North American HP user group announced it will unite with two of the others. Now Encompass, the Tandem group ITUG, and HP-Interex Europe/Middle East/Africa will all work together, bound under a single group which will have a new name announced sometime this year.

Three independent Hewlett-Packard user groups said Monday that they plan to merge into a single organization with more than 50,000 members in an effort to increase training opportunities and their clout with the IT vendor.

The groups also hope to reduce costs while using their combined resources to reach younger users of Hewlett-Packard Co.'s technologies through social networks and other Web 2.0 tools.

Today's Hewlett-Packard is the result of several mergers, but the company's customers still belong to user groups reflecting the old structures. That may be about to change. Compaq acquired Tandem (the 'NonStop' company); Compaq acquired Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC); and Hewlett-Packard and Compaq merged. But the user groups that had grown up around those companies largely continued as separate entities.
